The decision on Rio Tinto’s haul route is down to the wire and residents of Marquette County are stuck with a list of dismal options that include creating Marquette County Road 595 through a wilderness area, sending massive ore trucks down County Road 550 and through Marquette, and establishing a haul route on County Road 510 that would endanger residents and wildlife. MARQUETTE – Members of the Marquette County Board were angered and frustrated last week after state officials failed to match their revenue expectations for a proposed state severance tax on non-ferrous mining operations, including the Kennecott-Rio Tinto Eagle Mine. Continue reading

For the past several months, township, county and schools officials in Marquette County have seemingly been playing a high-stakes game of poker with mining companies, state lawmakers and administration officials over a the notion of creating a severance tax for non-ferrous mining projects, like the Rio Tinto Eagle Mine. On Aug. 28, the EPA will conduct a public hearing at the request of the Michigan Department Quality on the proposed County Road 595. Both agencies are charged with preserving and protecting our natural resources for present and future generations. Continue reading
Gov. Rick Snyder officially declared July 15 Lake Superior Day. Save the Wild U.P. celebrated with Waterpalooza at Mattson Lower Harbor Park. It was our first ever and it was a splash.
For an event that may take as long as three to six months or longer to coordinate, we pulled it off in the two months since I became office manager/outreach coordinator.
Some things on the schedule did not happen and some did that weren’t planned. But it was fun and I am already planning and looking forward to next year.
The board and I want to thank everyone that stopped by to share in the celebration of Lake Superior, to learn more about Save the Wild U.P., enjoy a cold KBC beer and let the kids splash down the water slide. Continue reading
